Kevin Lawrence Formula Drift Texas Pro2 Round 3

**** GUEST BLOG – BY KEVIN LAWRENCE ****

Hey Everybody, Dropping in with my Formula Drift Texas Recap.

After an early arrival and setup on Wednesday at the Texas Motor Speedway, the crew and I were able to grab an early dinner and some sleep before our first day of driving.
Thursday morning was awesome the weather was actually very mild for what the temperatures have been in previous years and was immensely cooler than the previous round in Orlando, FL. We arrived at the track early to set up our pits and wait for a few last minute shipments to arrive at the track, tires and a new front bumper for me. Our tires arrived an hour or so before practice so we got them all mounted up and set off to the hot pits on the track.

In the drivers meeting, the Judges went over the new driving line and clipping point locations that they had set up for this round. I knew practice would be crucial to get myself and the car dialed in to fluidly connect the course with speed, angle, and style. After the first practice session I was still struggling with the first turn to get the car setup to enter the power alley, then onto the reach out to the wall. Before second practice we made a gear change in the differential to try and adjust wheel speed some to see if it settle the car more to my liking. This had me running all of the track in 3rd gear instead of 4th. The change helped some but it seemed the change wasn’t enough as I was hitting the top of 3rd gear during the power alley in the acceleration zone holding my speed down. With practice ending soon I decided to shift the car into 4th in that area to get the wheel speed back for the acceleration zone and then would have to later drop back down into 3rd to finish the track out. This at the time felt like the best option for the limited runs I had gotten for practice and decided to go into qualifying with this gear setup.

It was now time for qualifying and as I pulled up to the line I felt good and was ready to make my first pass. I was given the go and left the start line, spinning the tires of the car most the way on the run up I got the car up to 3rd gear and initiated into the first turn. I felt the car float out a bit wider than I had desired which by the time I got the car back on line was after the new first front clip and knew that I was quite a bit off of it so I did my best to just finish out the run as smoothly as possible. Score for this run was a 77 which was high enough to get me on the board but I wanted to better the score.

On my second run I was able to get the car setup better on the first turn and through the power alley but coming into the rear wall section of the track I felt the car coming in a bit faster than normal. I tried to correct this by adding a bit more angle to the car to slow down a bit and to keep from making contact with the wall. I got through the wall section but the amount of angle I put into the car had me leaving that rear zone too early causing an early arrival at the next inner clip. I knew at this point my line was severely off at this time and would have caused me to plow through the front clip and drop my front tires off track. I decided to not risk damaging anything on the car by doing this so I pulled the car straight and shut down for my run giving me a 0 for this pass.

My first pass scored a 77, giving me an 11th place qualifying position. Putting me up against Jeff Jones in the Top 16.

Friday started similar to Thursday we had a late shipment of tires arriving so we got to the track early to receive and mount up, then we wait for our time to drive after the Pro1 qualifying. After watching the pro1 guys kill it in practice and qualifying it was our time to drive. I got a few runs in during practice that felt great but of course when you push to get that one more run in something always goes wrong. I was able to make it to the line for a final pass and was following Dirk Stratton in his C6 corvette. The run started off great but after pushing through the power alley I put too much focus on the front clip just before the transition at the wall. Upon focusing on that I realized that Dirk was slowing down more than I anticipated and by the time I realized this and got on brakes it was too late. We made contact his left rear wheel to my right rear wheel is what took most of the impact. I limped the car back to the hot pits to assess the damage, Luckily it was just a broken toe arm bracket that is made to buckle under impact to save more valuable pieces of the car. After a quick 5min change of parts and alignment adjustment, I was ready for Top 16.

Top 16 I was up against Jeff Jones I knew after my crash in Orlando after our OMT call I had to up the bar a bit to get the win clean and clear. But of course when the adrenaline is pumping and the anxiousness of battle hits its hard to keep 100% focused and react as fast as needed. I entered in behind him aggressively to keep a close proximity with intentions to get closer, I started to gain up closer on him and upon doing so I thought I saw what looked like him about to rotate the car however it was just him making an adjustment to his angle. After my previous run in practice with Dirk, my reaction was he was going to spin and I was going to plow through him, I stomped on the foot brake but at the same time partially lifting off throttle which caused a large bobble and straightening on my end. At that time he was able to pull a gap on me to the finish of the run.

The second run was my turn to lead, Doing my best to not let my nerves get to me from the first run I set off to get that 100pt qualifying run. I entered the first turn where I had set my mark and got on throttle and out to angle through the first turn and upshifting into the power alley. I noticed I had gained quite a bit more speed in this area as I did in qualifying but was ready for it so just before the transition towards the wall I reached to grab a bit of handbrake to slow the car down a bit. Upon doing so I either bumped my shifter or it had not been fully engaged in the gear so when I clutched into handbrake and the transmission unloaded it popped out of gear into neutral causing yet another straighten. After finishing the run the judges awarded the win to Jeff who would go on to the great 8.

All in all, it was a great round I want to thank everyone who is a part of the team for all their help and continued support as we together grow and learn from these events and push to get to that top spot on the podium!

Mordaunt Formula Drift FINAL: Round 8 Recap

The Formula Drift season wrapped up this last weekend with Round 8 at Irwindale Speedway with Konig® sponsored driver Patrick Mordaunt finishing strong with a good result in the final round.

Going into Round of 32, Patrick was paired up against Vaughn Gittin, Jr., one of the 3 drivers coming into the final round with a shot at the overall championship.  Gittin came out with a strong lead run but Patrick followed with an equally strong run on his lead, resulting in a One More Time call from the judges.  On the second match, Patrick had a strong follow and an excellent lead run but Vaughn also put down two good runs, leading to a second One More Time call.  You could tell both drivers really wanted the victory and the tension was high going into the third match.  Gittin came out strong on his lead run but Patrick stayed close on the big bank.  On the second half of the bank, Gittin scraped the wall, ending his run.  Patrick was able to avoid the collision and got the victory in one of the toughest battles of the weekend.

The round of 16 match up was another tough draw, with Patrick matched against points leader Chris Forsberg.  Forsberg started off with a strong lead run with Patrick closing the gap towards the finish.  Patrick then put down an strong lead, staying high on the inner bank at outer zone 2.  Forsberg was a little too aggressive on the inner bank and hit the wall.  Patrick completed an outstanding lead run to get the victory.

Patrick had yet another strong draw with a Top 8 match against perennial contender Justin Pawlak.  The first run featured a strong lead from Pawlak with Patrick putting in a good chase run.  Patrick continued his trend of the weekend with another excellent lead run, and Pawlak was unable to follow, spinning out at inner clip one.  Patrick was moving on the Final 4.

The day’s trend of very strong competition continued with Patrick set to go against top qualifier Dai Yoshihara, who had been on fire all weekend.  Yoshihara put down a strong lead with Patrick staying close around the course.  Patrick put down another in his series of strong lead runs but Yoshihara had better proximity on his chase run, giving Yoshihara the victory.

Mordaunt Formula Drift Round 7 Recap

Formula Drift returned to Texas Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago and brought Texas that Drift excitment that only they can deliver.  With them they brought some of the best professional drifters in the world to compete in both Pro 1 and Pro 2 drift series.

Konig sponsored driver Patrick Mordaunt was there and ready to take on the fast and difficult course. Toward the end of practice on Thursday Patrick had some axle trouble with his 350z which caused him to shut it down early.  However that was not an issue as they were up and ready to run again for qualifying on Friday.

On Friday Patrick went into qualifing looking to move up the standings after having mechanical problems in Round 6. Starting off strong, Patrick killed it on the initiation of his first run, but missed the second inside clip resulted in a qualifying score of 72.  A strong second qualifying run improved Patrick’s score and landed him in the 27th qualifying spot.  Patrick had a tough draw in the round of 32, going up against two-time Formula Drift champion and current points leader Chris Forsberg.

Fast forward to that battle.  On his chase run Patrick came off the initiation right on Chris’ door and maintained tight proximity through the first half of the course.  A small mistake on outer zone 2 let Chris create a little bit of separation on the second half of the course.  Patrick drove a strong lead run, but Forsberg was able to maintain good proximity throughout, giving Chris the victory.

Sometimes even when you drive well its just not enough!  It takes a ton of time and effort for these drivers and teams to compete at this level.  Great effort by Pat and his team.  We are looking forward to a strong finish to the season at the final round coming up on October 7-8 at Irwindale Speedway. Stay tuned!

Adam Knapik – 2nd Place – Top Drift Pro Am Round 3

With Round 3 of Top Drift Pro Am wrapped up, Konig Sponsored driver Adam Knapik brought home a 2nd Place podium finish in his Nissan 240sx!   Adam runs 18×9 / 18×10 Konig SSM wheels to compete in drifting and the occasional time attack type events.

Knapik’s Top Drift event was “no walk in the park”.  After partnering up with Zestino Tires right before the Round 3 event, there was a lot of dialing in to do with no time for testing.  Adam placed 4th in qualifying and then hit the tarmac for his Top 16 face-off.  Putting down a excellent lead run resulted in a “One More Time” decision win, advancing Knapik to the “Great 8” bracket.  The Great 8 bracket is where he found himself up against Shaun Illingsworth.   Adam had some confidence pulling away with win despite some of the difficulty in his follow run.

With a Top 4 standing Adam was paired up with Dominic Rotondo and his LS3 V8.  It was a battle for redemption for Adam, as he was taken out by Dominic in Round 2.  After his tire revisions from Round 2, Adam put it all out in his lead run to pull away with the Top 4 win.  Next Adam was paired with Alex Grimm and his unique Datsun 240z.  After a “One More Time” battle and a solid lead run by Adam, something didn’t feel right with his car during the follow run.  Despite of Adam’s Nissan slipping out from under him, he did his best to keep composure.  Unfortunately it was too big of mistake for the judges resulting in a 2nd Place podium finish.

It didn’t take Adam a long time to figure out what was causing his vehicle to feel so off.  There was a catch can spill which generously oiled up and made the front end on Adam’s Nissan extremely slick.  Despite the hick-up it was an overall successful event for Adam.  He furthered his over competition point standings, got some great seat time with his new tire setup and continued to make his loyal followers proud.

Vtec Academy Track Tests DA Integra Widebody

10″ Wide wheels on the front of a DA Integra Widebody

Brian and Carter Gillespie over at Vtec Academy / Hasport are no strangers to the track, or motorsports, or pushing the limit and they are definitely not shy about pushing the envelope (don’t believe us?  Check out Brian Gillespie’s crash at almost 200mph) !

Well again they are pushing the limits but this time Carter is at the wheel.  Together they have built a sick widebody DA Integra which is supercharged and runs a 10″ wide Konig Milligram (Flow Formed Wheel) in the FRONT!!!

Check out this video as they hit the track for a little tire test.  The goal was simple, see how the car changes with the widebody front, 285 – 18″ tire and the new found grip.  Without spoiling anything its incredible how much the car changes and what changes they will need to make next to continue to improve this setup!

Check out how their testing went in the video below!  ** Shout out to Robert Diaz and Hush Performance for the video **
